Let's Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women!"

This theme announcement builds on the work of so many activists during the 2010 campaign. The five sub-themes will be:
1. Bringing together women, peace, and human rights movements to challenge militarism
2. Proliferation of small arms and their role in domestic violence
3. Sexual violence in and after conflict
4. Political violence against women, including Pre/During/Post-election violence
5. Sexual and gender-based violence committed by state agents, particularly the police or military

Construyendo sobre la base de la información que hemos recibido de las participantes de la campaña del 2010, con la campaña de los16 Días de este año, vamos a investigar más profundamente los cinco temas que fueron señalados como prioritarios por las activistas que trabajan en torno a las entrecruzadas de la violencia contra las mujeres y el militarismo:

1. Uniendo a los movimientos de mujeres, la paz y los derechos humanos con el fin de desafiar al militarismo;

You Can't Erase Us

This image is a photo transfer monotype I created, no, co-created, in 2010, from a wall of grafitti I found in Oaxaca in 2006. The title "You Can't Erase Us" seems fitting for this post. There were no Imagina events in 2010, simply because the bicentenario took up everyone's time, energy and budget for the year. With a fresh start, we will see where it can go as we open the doors of all possibilities for 2011. Internationally, our voices continue to be heard, we will not be silenced, until violence against women is history.

The NGO Committee on the Status of Women/New York wishes to thank the talented artists, writers, performers and musicians who volunteered their time and efforts at the Forum. We applaud their generous spirit and dedication to bringing cultural messages of gender equality, development and peace.

The Salvation Army Brownsville Corps.Steel Orchestra was founded in 2007 and is a New York city-based group of young drummers aged 10 to 26 years. The steel orchestra plays a variety of instruments, but the principal ones are steel drums. “We chose this because we wanted something unique,” said Marc Brooks, their creative director. He notes that its origins in the Caribbean were linked to the history of slavery. In the early 20th century, as slavery came to an end in places like Trinidad, people used many cultural means to celebrate their newly found freedom of expression. At first, these drums were made from castaway biscuit tins, then, oil drums. The group has played at numerous Salvation Army events in the New York and New Jersey area. All songs are spiritually inspired so that young people learn to use music as a form of worship. E-mail: marc_darius@yahoo.com.

Kinding Sindaw Melayu Heritage (www.kindingsindaw.org) is a not-for-profit cultural organization whose mission is to reclaim, preserve and re-create the legends and unwritten ancient history of the Philippines when the country was known as “Dunya Melayu Nusantara”. It was founded in 1992 by the tradition bearer and artistic director Potri Ranka Manis, Bai a Labi a Gaus of Borocot, Maging, 15th Pagawidan of Pat Pangempong Ko Ranao. Kinding Sindaw’s repertoire is based on classic and ritual dances, kulintang music, chants and silat martial arts. The group is a resident dance theater member of LaMaMa, ETC, NYC. Among its education activities are workshops and school programs for colleges, communities and public and private schools as well as lecture forums on the history and traditions of Filipino oral history. JUNTOS: Artists United to End Violence Against Women is a grassroots organization begun in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, as a vehicle for awareness through artistic expression. The founder of the project, Lena Bartula, along with members of the Mexican and expatriate community, organized a series of events called “imagina 2009”. These activities included visual arts, panel discussion, poetry readings, film series, craft fairs and community celebrations organized as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign. The cultural events covered a wide range of topics from gender equality to HIV/AIDS and human rights at local and international levels. Margot Smith (www.offcentervideo.com) is a social scientist and convener of the Berkeley-East Bay Gray Panthers. To Empower Women: the Fourth U.N. World Conference was filmed in 1995 at the United Nations Fourth World Conference in Beijing, China and narrated by the late Congresswoman Bella Abzug. As an active feminist, Margot worked to educate the public on global women's issues. To this end, the film was on several PBS stations, won a trophy at Movies on a Shoestring film festival in Rochester, NY, and was shown at the Ohio Independent Film Festival, the American Public Health Association film festival, and several other festivals. Ms. Smith produces award winning independent videos on political and social justice issues and is a member of the San Francisco Film Society, California, USA. The Children’s Theatre Company (http://www.childrenstheatrecompany.org) is rooted in the conviction that through the magic of theater, children and youth can be the voices of change and agents of healing. In collaboration with professional composers, writers, directors and choreographers, CTC engages four age groups in the creation and publication of musicals, plays and cast-albums. Heralded as the “crown jewel of children’s theatre in New York” by actor James Earl Jones, it serves an average of 300 to 400 children per week with a resident theatre in Greenwich Village, public schools residencies, and has eight active chapters across the United States. The Company has garnered accolades from Verizon Literacy Awards, New York Times, appeared on Sesame Street, the Today Show, Good Morning America and performed at the United Nations with Nelson Mandela. Lynn Nottage (www.lynnnottage.net/) is a playwright from Brooklyn. Her plays include Intimate Apparel, Fabulation, or the Re-Education of Undine, Crumbs from the Table of Joy, Las Meninas, and Ruined (awarded the Pulitzer Prize for 2008-2009). These have been produced at theatres in the US and abroad including the Manhattan Theatre Club, the Goodman Theatre, the Roundabout Theatre Company, Playwrights Horizons, Center Stage, South Coast Rep., Second Stage, Freedom Theatre, Sundance Institute Theatre Lab, St. Louis Black Rep., Crossroads Theatre, Intiman, San Jose Rep., Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Steppenwolf, Yale Rep., The Vineyard Theatre, The Women’s Project, New Dramatists Playtime Lab and The Tricycle Theatre in London. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2007 MacArthur Genius Award, an OBIE Award for playwriting, NY Drama Critics Circle Award, Best play and John Gassner Outer Critics Circle awards, and American Theatre Critics/Steinberg 2004. Nottage is a graduate of Brown University and the Yale School of Drama, where she is currently a visiting lecturer.

Project Manager Announced

JUNTOS is proud to announce our new project manager for imagina 2009. Laura Rodriguez, a San Miguel artist and events planner has come on board to organize, coordinate and assist with all committees in preparation for our November projects.

She will definitely have her hands full, with so many events in the works. Here are some of the latest:

*Gala reception and ribbon cutting to inaugurate the 16 Days of Activism in San Miguel.

*A Gratitude Feast on Thanksgiving Day with the women of CASA, masterminded by our local culinary explorer, Kirsten West.

*An exhibition of cloth Milagros made by women from four different ranchitos, under the direction of Angeles Agreda Peinado, seen here with Laura.

*Performance/ drama workshops for the students at Santa Julia.

Artists united can make great things happen!

Trish Snyder, organizer for the San Miguel Walk, has agreed to organize the film series in conjunction with JUNTOS. All screenings during i m a g i n a will benefit the Violence Prevention Programs at CASA. José Luis Mendoza, cultural and artistic director of la Biblioteca, has scheduled our first film event: “In The Time of the Butterflies,” the story of the Mirabal sisters whose murder is commemorated on Nov. 25, International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women.

Karen and I met with Jaime Fernandez, director at the Instituto Allende, and he is agreeable to hosting an exhibition for i m a g i n a in Galeria Pinto. A portion of the proceeds from any sales will benefit Mujeres en Cambio. If you want to work on this exhibition, let me know by making a comment below.

Susan Page, founder of the Author’s Sala, has dedicated a part of the November readings to the issue of Violence Against Women. As a preview to i m a g I n a events later in the month, the November 12 event will feature Marcia Wolffe and Sandra Gulland. Serendipitously, this day is also National Book Day in Mexico, in honor of Mexico’s Tenth Muse, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. www.sanmiguelauthors.com

Thank you Vicki for helping me get on this blog. So here is the up to date report on our project of going into a community with the digital cameras.
A bilingual friend Aura offered to be on our committee and went with me to make two presentations to DIF. The female Director was very enthusiastic about the project, but asked us to return after July 4. I now realize that the next few weeks are for many at DIF the last weeks of their 3 years appointments and many of them will change with the new election. Meanwhile they have a lot of paper work to do to describe what they have accomplished in the last 3 years.I guess we will be starting over in July, but at least our two meetings will be on record.

Since then, I have approached Gerardo at Art Print and asked if and how he could assist us in the project. I have to send him this week an outline of the project and he says they can help us by discounting the work on any prints that we need. We would have to get in touch with his partner if we want the gallery. Vicki and I and Aura so far have discussed this possibility and do not feel it is right for this project. We think DIF would be a more appropriate place because the families would want to attend. Perhaps someone else could approach Artprint for gallery space for another project.
Next Gerardo suggested that we meet with Casa Cultura about using their gallery for our project and also perhaps they might have some input. We hope to meet with them next week.

At a party recently, I was sitting beside Julie Durand and as Lena had mentioned, she is interested in what we are doing and suggested that the Bernie Weisman foundation might be able to help us fund the batteries, and cards, printing etc. Vicki who is in charge of the cameras is going to approach her.

Creo que se inicio en julio, pero por lo menos las dos reuniones serán en acta.

Desde entonces, me han acercado a Gerardo en el Art Print y preguntó si él y cómo podría ayudar a nosotros en el proyecto. Tengo que enviarle esta semana un resumen del proyecto y dice que puede ayudar a nosotros por descontado el trabajo en cualquier impresiones que necesitamos. Habría que ponerse en contacto con su pareja, si queremos que la galería. Vicki y Aura y yo hemos discutido hasta el momento esta posibilidad y no se siente que es correcto para este proyecto. Creemos que el DIF sería un lugar más apropiado, porque las familias que desean asistir. Tal vez alguien más podría Artprint enfoque para la galería espacio para otro proyecto.
Siguiente Gerardo sugiere que nos encontramos con la Casa Cultura sobre el uso de su galería de nuestro proyecto y que quizás también podría tener alguna aportación. Esperamos poder cumplir con ellos la próxima semana.

Recientemente en una fiesta, yo estaba sentado al lado de Julie Durand y Lena como había mencionado, ella está interesada en lo que estamos haciendo, y sugirió que la fundación Bernie Weisman podría ayudarnos a financiar las baterías, y tarjetas, la impresión que Vicki etc está a cargo de las cámaras va a su enfoque.

Hi everyone!

Lena and I are off to the Instituto tomorrow to see if JUNTOS "imagina" can use one of the large spaces for an exhibition in November. Can any of you research spaces we could use for exhibitions?? Let's make a list of the possible galleries, spaces. Remember it can be an existing gallery, where the artists in the gallery would want to have an exhibition in support of "imagine" a world with out violence, "imagine"a world that is safe for all women.

Lena y yo estamos fuera de el Instituto para ver si mañana JUNTOS "imagina" puede utilizar uno de los grandes espacios para una exposición en noviembre. ¿Puede alguno de ustedes los espacios de investigación que podrían utilizar para las exposiciones? Hagamos una lista de los posibles galerías, espacios. Recuerde que puede ser una galería, donde los artistas de la galería que desea tener una exposición en apoyo de "imaginar" un mundo sin violencia, "imaginar" un mundo que sea seguro para todas las mujeres.
